Our story

The story of our foundation is tightly linked to the story of Liviu and Mihaela Guias, the ones that had the initiative to start create it. Everything started with a simple humanitarian gesture: the desire to help the street kids. Far from being wealthy, Liviu and Mihaela thought that they could ask for support to help these children. Thus they started to collect food, clothes and footwear, which they were distributing to kids living in the sewage system. What greater satisfaction than to offer a poor kid a hot soup and a piece of bread when outside is freezing cold?

But just a soup was not enough, so Guias family - Liviu, Mihaela and their three natural children - join together in a family committee and decided that they will do more than this. They thought that they need a place where these kids can live on a daily basis, to be nourished, cleaned, medically assisted and, why not, being educated. And they were so determined to do this that they decided to sell the apartment destined for their older daughter to get the money for this humanitarian project. With these money they bought an old house in Domnesti village, 10 km away from Bucharest.

They started by demolishing the old house to make space for the new buildings. At the same time with the demolition, Liviu and Mihaela tried to get other people in this beautiful project. They found support from a lot of Romanians, not very wealthy, but with big hearts. By the end of summer 1996 they finished to build a kitchen, a small warehouse with a wooden attic and a outdoor toilet (old country style).

Here, in the new kitchen, they started to cook the food they were daily distributing to the street kids, in the warehouse they were storing things collected from donors and very often they lived in the wooden attic, without the facilities provided by the urban environment. Neither during the construction, neither after that, they forget about their street friends. Every day those kids were waiting them to bring a hot meal. Ceaselessly they knocked many, many doors, looking for support. Some doors were slammed in their face, but after 3 years a new building was finalized.

This was a 2 floors house, with 5 bedrooms, a living room, modern showers and toilets. Perseverance and hard work were the keys to this success. The best proof is that after another 3 years of efforts, a second building was raised, also with 5 bedrooms, showers and toilets, and a recreational room at the groundfloor, where kids may paint, draw or unleash their fantasy. Through the cooperation and support of the Child Protection Department of Ilfov county, on July 21st 1999 the first 9 children were sheltered in the new buildings.

Unfortunately, there were troubles too. In plain winter, at January 5 2004, the foster house was on fire. Due to a power problem our destinies could take a dramatic turn. Only God saved everyone, so nobody was hurt. To save ourselves we ran away, barefooted and only with the clothes we were wearing at that time. The same friends have stood beside us, they helped the reconstruction and they brought clothes and footwear from their children. Only God knows how we were able to move back in our foster house in only 26 days. At February 1, 2004 we get back to our rooms.

Thus, with God's help and the ceaseless work of true people, the foundation was created and started to function. Remember that everything started with a small and simple humanitarian gesture. Isn't it true that you don't hear such a beautiful story every day?
